Curriculum
Curriculum at
Arthurs Creek Primary School
Arthurs Creek Primary School teaches the Victorian Curriculum F-10 as set by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, with additional opportunities providing interest and engagement as part of an integrated program featuring STEAM and extra-curricular learning.
The curriculum is the common set of knowledge and skills required by students for life-long learning, social development and active and informed citizenship.
Staff work together to align the curriculum so that it is sequential throughout the years of primary school. Our teachers work to develop high quality teaching and learning programs that reflect high impact teaching strategies. Student progress is closely tracked to ensure all students are demonstrating strong learning gains. Learning Intentions and success criteria are developed for all sessions, making the focus and indicators of success of the lesson visible to the students. Feedback is integral in this process, where teachers both give and receive feedback from students.
Main Subject Areas
English
Each year level has two hours of literacy learning daily. Each lesson includes targeted teaching and structured activities in reading and viewing, writing and speaking and listening. The program is delivered through our workshop model.
This involves a whole class introduction for tuning in and explicit instruction, small group rotations with a teacher focus group or individual work, a check-in to clarify student understanding and a further explicit teaching and student work time. Reading digital texts and writing using the iPads and laptops is an integral part of the program. We are privileged to have 1-1 devices.
This model “looks” different across the year levels as students progress and begin to work more independently.
Humanities
Each classroom explores a different area of Inquiry each term which is integrated into other subject areas. The areas covered are civics and citizenship, geography, economics, business and history.
The Inquiry lessons are designed for students to develop an interest in and enjoyment of both local and global knowledge. Students are encouraged to examine processes that have shaped the modern world.
This is demonstrated by whole class discussions, small group work, partnership work, poster and presentation making. Often an incursion or excursion will be provided to expand the student's knowledge about a topic. As they progress through primary school, students revisit topics to deepen their understanding.
Mathematics
The Mathematics curriculum aims to ensure that students develop useful mathematical and numeracy skills for everyday life in a technological world.
The curriculum is organised by the three strands of numbers and algebra, measurement, geometry, statistics and probability. Each strand is broken into sub-strands.
Our priority is to develop numerate life-long learners who love maths, can see connections and apply mathematical concepts, skills and processes to pose and solve problems.
